“For live performance, you have to see Carleen Anderson at least three times in your life. I would sit around a venue all day just to hear her soundcheck.” Amy Winehouse.
Long before she gained global recognition as the lead singer and songwriter for the Young Disciples in 1991, Carleen Anderson studied music education and performance at USC (University of Southern California).
Her career switch from teaching to performing was the result of being convinced by her stepfather, Bobby Byrd, (long-time collaborator of her Godfather, James Brown), to be the opening act for his European tour in 1988. This was followed by being shortlisted with the Young Disciples for the Mercury Music Prize (1992), nominated for the Best Solo International Newcomer Brit Award (1995), and the winner of the 2013 JazzFM Best UK Vocalist award.
This four-day immersive workshop at The Premises Studios will cover amongst many other topics:
Technique Assessment and Song Selection
Specific Technical skills for each individual Singer
Solo Improvisation/Ad Lib drills
Advanced Recording Techniques for Singers
Song Narrative Dramatization
Students will learn to create their own version of the backstory of a song, from the lyrics. An example Carleen has given is Noel Gallagher’s ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, about a groupie being left by a famous musician. The narrative Carleen conceived for her own interpretation of the song is a message from her grandparents to rise above adversity. On the final day you will be given the chance to record your own track in our world class recording studio with some of the UK’s top session musicians! Your finished recording will be mixed, mastered and delivered to you approximately a week later.
The fee for all four days is just £495 INCLUDING the recording session.
