Jazz, Blues, Funk and Latin piano intensive workshop for the last week of summer holidays.
Led by awarding-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Yeoh
With the help of experienced and renowned tutors:
Fancy honing your piano skills with the best in the legendary Premises Studios, where the good and the great – from Nina Simone to Robert Glasper – have rehearsed and recorded? Want to create beautiful sounds with the guidance, encouragement and expertise of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable tutors in the biz? Want to walk away with a professional studio recording of your best version of a jazz standard (or your own tune) complete with a top flight rhythm section? Want to work hard, have fun, and learn the techniques of improvisation, rhythm, studio recording, harmonies and modal jazz?
Then this is most certainly the course for you. We provide everything you would expect from a top music studio. All you need to bring is your desire to improve and a willingness to get playful, curious and experiment with sounds and techniques not yet in your piano comfort zone.
Do you need to be a top-grade musician already? Nope. Sure, it’s good to know your way around the keys and have a good working knowledge of chord progressions, scales and have a good sense of rhythm and melody, but we’re pretty sure whatever your level, we can help you not only get much better quite quickly, you will also remember how much fun it is to play when you are not being taught to the test. Sometimes weekly lessons and practice for exams can suck the joy out of music. So why not spend the last blast of the post-Covid summer restoring that joy, and becoming a much better and more confident player as well?
On the first day of the course, we’ll get a sense of your ability and put you into a group where you feel most at ease with the pace of tuition. From there on in, each day will be spent learning and perfecting new sounds and new skills, doing masterclasses and playing with like-minded musicians. On the final day you will go into Recording Studio A and cut a track of your choice with a dream-ticket bass player and drummer. The result will be your own master recording of a piece that you’ve thoroughly nailed and made your own.
Most importantly, you will have fun. Nikki Yeoh and the other tutors know how to tease out your playful, creative, experimental side, whilst making sure that your technique in all jazz-related forms is better crafted and more accomplished than you may have thought possible.
• Jazz harmony and chord voicings
• Modal jazz
• Latin/Brazilian jazz
• Improvisation techniques
• Recording your own track with a top rhythm section: Winston Clifford, drums (Courtney Pine, Jason Rebello, Archie Shepp, Julian Joseph etc) and Dominic Howles, bass (Stacey Kent, Don Weller, Anita Wardell, Christine Tobin etc)
