Gwyneth Herbert is an award-winning British composer and lyricist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Drawing on influences from the worlds of folk, jazz, art pop and contemporary classical, she has released 6 critically-acclaimed albums (including the first UK Blue Note release in 30 years), toured across the world, and has shared stages with the likes of Boy George, Amy Winehouse and John Cooper Clarke.
Performances in the past few months include a 10-date jazz festival tour of North America; a concert of her own work with the London Sinfonietta at a sold-out Kings Place, London; and a six-week run voicing the title role in the Bristol Old Vic’s hugely successful production of The Snow Queen, for which she was also composer, lyricist and musical director.
As well as her own work Gwyneth has produced records for musical theatre legend Frances Ruffelle and satirical neo-cabaret act Bourgeois and Maurice. Other career highlights include opening the London and Montreal Jazz Festivals, having her recording featured in Hollywood blockbuster Leap Year and performing her own film score at the British Film Institute.
This four-day immersive workshop at The Premises Studios will be tailored according to each individual’s needs, covering a broad range of topics including:
Lyrical exploration: the process of song selection; the art and arc of storytelling; finding your truth within a song.
Arrangement: developing your own musical language; storytelling through arrangement; hooks, dialogues and textures; working with harmonies; the importance of space.
Live and studio performance: audience communication; overcoming nerves; becoming a confident bandleader; projection, dynamics and microphone techniques; the difference between live and studio performance.
Songwriting: finding inspiration and overcoming blocks; a devising toolkit involving lyrics, melody and harmony
On the final day you will be given the opportunity to record your own track – produced by Gwyneth – in our world-class recording studio with some of the UK’s top session musicians! Your finished recording will be mixed, mastered and delivered to you approximately a week later.
The fee for all four days is just £495 INCLUDING the recording session.
